Throughout the centuries human beings have continued to chase the dream of flying and thanks to the new iFly Indoor Skydiving Gold Coast Facility at Surfers Paradise you can now do just that!

Indoor skydiving is rapidly turning out to be the trendiest action-adventure sport activity in Australia.

But what is Indoor Skydiving exactly?

Indoor “skydiving” is carried out in a vertical wind tunnel, which is a gigantic glass cylindrical tube powered by a wind generator that produces enough wing to enable you to fly your body on a pillow of air! It offers a very similar feeling to free-fall skydiving but without the need to dive from an aeroplane or use a parachute.

Wind tunnels have been used for aerodynamic experiments for well over a century but very few people know that one of the earliest wind tunnels was built by the Wright Brothers who built their very first flying machine in 1899.

It was a basic, 5-foot wingspan, unmanned kite that could be manoeuvered by twisting the wings. The Kite experiments led to the development of their first un-powered manned glider in 1900. The glider, however, was producing much less lift and a great deal more drag than they required for sustained flight.

They had to come up with a solution and decided they needed an experimental wind machine. The initial wind tunnel they built comprised of a very simple square tube for channeling the air flow, a fan and a two-element balance positioned in the airstream to experiment with their wing designs.

The initial data from the makeshift tunnel were so favorable that the Wrights promptly constructed a much bigger and more progressive one. The essential knowledge they obtained from this wind tunnel provided them the understanding they would need to create the first ever successful, manned, motorised aircraft, the 1903 WRIGHT FLYER.

Wind tunnels have come leaps and bounds since that time and are now enormous and extremely sophisticated. They have been put to use at some stage in the construction of every single flying machine since then. These days they have numerous applications from construction of more efficient cars and trucks to getting significantly better results in all sorts of sports activities such as skiing and cycling for instance.

A vertical wind tunnel is simply a wind tunnel which moves the airflow upwards in a vertical column. The first vertical wind tunnel was the 20-Foot Vertical Spin Tunnel built by NASA in the USA in 1940. But this wind tunnel had no more than a 90 KMH top wind speed, which was far too slow to make it possible for human flight.

The very first person to fly in a vertical wind tunnel was in 1964 at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in the USA and the first vertical wind tunnel, constructed especially for recreational indoor skydiving, opened in 1982 in Las Vegas, USA.

A recreational wind tunnel makes it possible for everyday people to discover the amazing feeling of flight without the need for aircraft or parachutes, by means of the force of wind being created vertically. Air flow travels upwards at around 200km/h (120 mph), which is actually the terminal velocity of a human body falling belly-to-earth.

A vertical wind tunnel is commonly called ‘indoor skydiving’ due to their popularity among skydivers, who claim that the feeling is very comparable to skydiving. The human body ‘floats’ in midair in a vertical wind tunnel, replicating the physics of ‘body flight’ encountered during freefall.

So although vertical wind tunnels were originally designed for aerodynamic research, these days most are used as recreational wind tunnels, generally promoted as “indoor skydiving”. Not only have they proved to be a very popular and widely used training resource for skydivers but also for many people who would like to experience the feeling of body flight for the first time in a very safe environment.

The iFly Indoor Skydiving Gold Coast Experience

When you make your first visit to iFly Indoor Skydiving Gold Coast the full beginner experience typically lasts somewhere between 1-2 hours. After arriving at iFly Indoor Skydiving Gold Coast and checking in you will likely get the chance to observe other people flying in the tunnel.

Your own personal Indoor Skydiving Gold Coast instructor will then take you through an introduction session in which you will be taught all the things you need to know in order to enjoy your very first flight safe and sound.

Immediately after your classroom training session you will be dressed in a jumpsuit, helmet and goggles (all provided by IFly Indoor Skydiving Gold Coast) and you will then take turns flying with the other people in your class.

You will fly at least twice in a one-on-one situation with your instructor. He or she will demonstrate the simple and easy movements and if you are carrying them out properly you will soon be released to fly on your own.

Whilst you are flying, any family or friends who have come to watch can take photos/videos although professional photos and videos of your flight will also be taken that you can choose afterwards.

iFly Indoor Skydiving Gold Coast also offer ‘High Flights’ during which your instructor flies with you and takes you up and down in the tunnel, flying a lot higher than you are able to fly by yourself.
